1981 Donruss Top Whatever...

A few weeks ago, I debut the "Top Whatever" countdown. Where I would rank what I had of a given set, housed in my three ring binders. The number of cards in each countdown would depend on however many I kept in my collection. My first countdown was the Top 115 1981 Fleer cards . Those cards came from a sealed Wax Box I bought online in June, 2011. The same day I purchased the box of 1981 Fleer, I also purchased a box of 1981 Donruss. Which means the second edition of the Top Whatever Countdown will cover that box of 1981 Donruss. I plan on continuing the Top Whatever Countdown in future posts, highlight personal favorite and/or notable sets in my collection. But back to 1981 Donruss for today... 2025 Bowman Mega Box - The Two Box Review

Used to love ripping Bowman. It was the set I looked forward to the most, every year. After following each year's MLB Draft, I waited anxiously for cards of these recent draft picks, with Photoshopitized MLB uniforms. Until Topps -later, Fanatics- ruined all the joy the set had to offer. Taking advantage of collectors that wanted to speculate on the newest prospects. Pricing the product beyond reach, while turning the brand into nothing more than a bloated cash grab. Jack up the print runs for base cards just to keep the long odds on the seemingly endless and pointless parallels.   Knowing these cards will be the hottest sellers of the year. Fanatics can do whatever they want. Charge whatever they want. It's always going to sell.   To an increasingly smaller number of collectors.   This is my story and experience with 2025 Bowman. Since I know you've been keeping count, I don't need to tell you this is my 299th story, posted to 4 Baggers. Coming up next, I have a story that I'm really excited to post. I've spent a lot of time writing and editing, to make sure it's the best representation of the piece that inspired it. My 300th story is one I've wanted to do since I started 4 Baggers, in July 2017. Which is all great and stuff, but I still have to have a 299th story, before the 300th surfaces. So as not to take away from the greatness of the next story, I needed to come up with something quick and simple, to keep the pace. What Happened to Clark's Submarine Sandwich?

Well, they went out of business! Yeah, that's the short answer.  But more importantly, what happened to each individual Clark's Submarine Sandwich store? Once there were 15 of them scattered around the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area, but they were all gone by 1991. Clark's still has a small but loyal following around town, and a reputation built off the bread, thinly sliced onions and most important, the sandwich oil that was it's signature. While the chain is long gone, I want to know just how gone is it?  For example, my hometown had a Clark's Submarine Sandwiches, and that building is still standing. Former Clark's Submarine Sandwich Location: 401 Northdale Blvd. Coon Rapids Back in October 2006, the building had long been sitting empty, but was still in good shape. Here we have former Houston Astros shortstop, Carlos Correa hoisting the 2017 World Series Garbage Can, as the team celebrates around him... Leaving the Houston Astros after the 2021 season, Correa signed an opt-out filled 3 year contract with the Minnesota Twins (a signing that shocks me to this day). Through cancelled contracts and bad medical reports, that was eventually turned into a 7 year contract for $234 million.With option years that could be tacked on at the end. One of the key players in the 2017 sign stealing scandal, now plays for my team.   The Astros held a press conference when spring training opened in February, 2020. Among the players attempting to save face, Correa said: "We were wrong for everything we did in 2017. It's not what we stand for. It's not what we want to portray as an organization, and we were definitely wrong about all that and we feel really sorry. Abandoned Groceries - Rainbow Foods - Blaine, MN

Rainbow Foods is a defunct chain of Minnesota grocery stores. Rainbow made its debut in 1983, founded by Sid Applebaum, of Applebaum's Grocery Stores and D. B. Reinhart, of Gateway Foods. Quickly growing to 40 plus stores throughout Minnesota by the mid-1990's, Rainbow Foods was the second-largest grocery chain in the Twin Cities, behind Cub Foods. And you know how we feel about Cub Foods... Applebaum and Reinhart sold Rainbow Foods to Texas-based wholesaler, Fleming Companies, in 1994. Fleming Companies held onto Rainbow until 2003. Flirting with both Safeway and Albertsons, before selling their 31 stores to Milwaukee based Roundy's, for 82.5 million. Fleming closed the other 12 locations not involved in the sale, cashing out on the grocery store business completely. On May 7, 2014, Roundy's sold 18 of the Rainbow Foods stores to a consortium of their own competition for 65 million dollars. Ghosts of Riverdale Past - Coon Rapids, MN

Recently there’s been a lot of chatter amongst the townsfolk about the retail abomination known as Riverdale. Another round of store closures has people talking about what a massive failure this shopping cluster has always been, and why retail is the way it is, and who's to blame and all that kind of stuff. Bottom line being, more stores that people liked shopping at are gone. For whatever reason. Which made me wonder, how many former businesses in Riverdale did I manage to get pictures of over the years? As I started going through the Riverdale picture folder on my external drive, I found far more than I'd expected. This is by no means EVERY former business that didn't survive the ridiculous conditions of shopping in my hometown, but it's an interesting peek into some of what didn't work. Abandoned Retail - Target - Coon Rapids, MN

Target T-42. The 42nd Target store in the world, was located in Coon Rapids, MN. Until it was replaced by Target T-1144, a mile or so to the north, 26 years later. Coon Rapids Target opened October 19, 1972, and closed October 6, 1998. Living on the north side of town in the 1970’s and 1980’s, big box retailers like Zayre and Kmart were more frequently visited, since they were closer to our house. Target was patronized less often, and usually paired with grocery shopping at Red Owl. Complete with video games while my mom shopped for food. And copies of Mad magazine slipped into the cart when no one was looking. Downtown Center, anchored by Festival Foods, opened in 1987. Sitting at the corner of Round Lake and Bunker Lake, in Andover, that shopping center was now more convenient for weekly groceries. Junk Wax Prospector - David McCarty - Minnesota Twins

For much of the early 1990's, my card collecting habits could be summed up as a Junk Wax Prospector. This was back when you could find packs of even Minor League baseball cards in retail outlets like gas stations and grocery stores! During the era where every card was way, way, way, waaaaaaay overproduced, I paid extra attention to acquiring cards of the hottest rookies before they made the Major Leagues. Surely those would be worth more money someday! I was correct on a few of players for whom I predicted stardom, and wrong on quite a few more... The Junk Wax Prospector is a series I'm starting to highlight my favorite early 1990's prospects, both good and bad, and how they fared... Gates Rubber Company - Demolition Diary part 1

As far as I'm concerned, the city of Denver's most important landmark was the abandoned Gates Rubber factory. Shown here from the southeast, at roughly Broadway and Mississippi Avenues, from two photographs spliced together somewhat decently. The massive factory's first structures were built in 1910. New construction and expansion took place over much of the 20th century, until the plant's closure in 1991. Ever since the rubber production was outsourced, rumors of the complex's demolition have run rampant. Until that one year when it finally happened. I did a poor job of documenting many of my favorite properties in the state of Colorado, nearly the entire time I lived in the state. So I made the resolution, that as soon as I first found out the shovels were chewing red brick, that I would be there to extensively cover it's demise.
